Woodside Energy Begins Search for New CEO

Woodside Energy, Australia’s largest independent oil and gas producer, has now initiated the process of searching for a new Chief Executive Officer, following the resignation of its previous CEO, Meg O’Neill, who took up the topmost position in global giant BP. This is a critical transition period for Woodside Energy, an entity that is vital to the Australian and world LNG markets.

The board has appointed Liz Westcott as the Acting CEO, effective immediately, while the company embarks on a comprehensive search exercise globally. Westcott is the most senior of the existing executive team at Woodside and is expected to provide stability to the company’s massive portfolio of businesses while the succession exercise is undertaken.

Woodside’s chair explained that “the fact that we are commencing a global search for a CEO indicates the size and complexity of our business and our global operations.” With significant operations in Australia, the Gulf of Mexico, and worldwide LNG value chains, the new CEO will face the challenge of leading the company through a “rapidly changing energy landscape that is influenced by forces of decarbonization, geopolitical forces, and investor preferences.”

Her tenure has been one of strategic expansion and consolidation following the merger between Woodside and BHP’s petroleum assets. During her reign, Woodside has diversified its LNG base to the global market while taking part in the emerging theme of reduced carbon sources. Her soon-to-be former company has attracted the global community’s attention following her appointment as the first female CEO for BP.

Woodside’s change in leadership occurs at a time when the energy sector is under intense scrutiny from both the regulator and shareholders. Maximizing the return of value to shareholders and reducing greenhouse gas emissions continue to be the most daunting task for the sector’s players. In a statement made by the company’s board of directors, the search for a successor for the departed CEO is expected to focus on a appointee with strong capital discipline skills.

The response of the market to these leadership changes has also received a great deal of attention. Despite some initial turbulence as a result of Woodside’s share price fluctuations when O’Neill left, analysts have welcomed a professional internal acting CEO as a step in the right direction. Shareholders would want to see how a continuity of momentum is achieved.

The role of Liz Westcott, the Acting Group CEO, has been critical. The appointments are significant, with many years of experience at a group-wide level in the three key areas of operation, safety, and major projects. The appointments are also expected to provide continuity in decision-making, especially regarding major projects. It has not been stated that Liz Westcott, the Acting Group CEO, shall be a candidate for the position. The appointments shall occur based on merit.

The global search is anticipated to attract candidates from the global energy sector, including those who have experience working in the LNG and offshore sectors as well as project delivery. There is also speculation building that Woodside might choose a leader who has a stronger focus on energy transitions given the shift towards the development of lower-carbon solutions in the energy sector. As Woodside embarks on this new phase, the result of its hunt for a Chief Executive will also attract keen interest not only among its stock market investors but also among policymakers and its rivals. “The board’s succession decisions will help to set the future course between these competing priorities, but for now, it’s a period of stability, continuity, and finding a leader who can take Woodside through a very pivotal period,” it is quoted as saying.
