Trump and Putin Talk Peace, But No Deal Yet – Ukraine’s Ambassador Sounds the Alarm
Russian President Accused of Trying to Destroy Democracy After Alaska Meeting
Trump and Putin Meet – But No Peace Deal Reached
Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump met for nearly three hours in Alaska to discuss ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. After the talks, both leaders said “great progress” was made — but confirmed that no peace deal was signed.
Trump told reporters, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” adding that he plans to brief NATO leaders and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the meeting.
Putin Says Ukraine’s Security Must Be Guaranteed, But Talks Root Causes
Putin, speaking through an interpreter, claimed he supports Ukraine’s security being guaranteed. However, he insisted the “root causes” of the war must be addressed first.
Ukraine’s Ambassador Responds: ‘Putin Wants to Destroy Democracy’
Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, sharply criticized Putin’s comments. Speaking to the ABC, he said the Russian leader’s real goal is to wipe out an independent and democratic Ukraine.
“An Independent Ukraine is the Root Cause – For Russia”
“When Putin talks about the ‘root cause of war’, it’s an independent Ukraine on the map of Europe,” Myroshnychenko said. “That’s the only cause of war for Russia.”
He added that Putin had initially planned to take Kyiv in just a few days and seize control of all Ukraine within weeks. “He is pursuing his ambition of destroying democracy next door,” the ambassador warned.
