Sanjeev Gupta—Executive Chairman, GFG Alliance Australia (Industry Watch)
Sanjeev Gupta is the Executive Chairman of GFG Alliance. This is a company that works with steel, mining, energy and aluminium. They have businesses in places, including Australia. For example they have the Whyalla steelworks in South Australia.
Sanjeev Gupta was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. He started his business career when he was very young. He began the Liberty House Group in 1992. At that time he was still studying at the University of Cambridge. Since then Sanjeev Gupta has built a big international company, the GFG Alliance, which is a global industrial group with major operations, in steel, mining, energy and aluminium.
Gupta has a plan for industry that has been around for a time. It brings together industries like heavy manufacturing with ideas about being kind to the earth. When Gupta is in charge the GFG Alliance works on something called Green Steel. This means they want to make steel in a way that’s good for the earth. They do this by recycling steel using energy from the sun and wind and using technologies, like hydrogen to make steel and aluminium. The GFG Alliance has a lot of businesses. These include Liberty Steel Group, ALVANCE Aluminium Group and SIMEC Energy Group. These businesses do things like working with metals, energy and building big projects.
In Australia Gupta has made some big deals and started some new things that people are talking about. When he bought the Arrium mining and steel assets, including the Whyalla steelworks in 2017 it was a big move for a foreign investor in Australia. Guptas plans for the Whyalla operations are important to his goal of making low-carbon steel and helping industry in the region come back, to life. Gupta wants to make Guptas low-carbon steelmaking a big part of this plan.
Guptas industrial empire has been having a lot of problems lately. The company that gave him money Greensill Capital went bankrupt in 2021. This left Guptas company, GFG Alliance with a lot of debt and people they owed money to were not happy. They are still arguing about it in 2025.
In Australia the government had to step in to help the Whyalla steelworks because Guptas company was not paying its debts. The government was worried that the company would not be able to keep going. This caused a discussion about what should happen to the steel industry in that area and whether private companies should be in charge of big factories, like that. Guptas industrial empire is still facing these problems.
Gupta is dealing with a lot of pressure. He still says he is committed to making sure the main operations at the Whyalla plant are stable. He wants to make the “Back to Black” plan work, which is supposed to help the Whyalla plant make money again. Gupta says he will keep investing in the plant and working on the engineering side of things to get the blast furnace running at capacity. He is doing all this while also talking to people about financing and restructuring the plant. The Whyalla plant and the “Back to Black” plan are really important, to Gupta.
Gupta’s approach reflects a blend of industrial ambition, strategic risk-taking, and a commitment to sustainable production, but also highlights the complexities of managing highly leveraged global industrial portfolios in volatile markets. In Australia and beyond, his leadership remains one of the most closely watched narratives in the evolving landscape of heavy industry and green manufacturing.
