Dr Stuart Minchin Appointed CEO of Bureau of Meteorology
The Australian Government has made the appointment of Dr. Stuart Minchin as the Bureau of Meteorology’s new Chief Executive Officer and Director of Meteorology. Dr. Minchin will assume his five-year term on November 10, 2025, replacing Dr. Andrew Johnson, who finished a nine-year term as the Bureau’s head.
A Distinguished Career in Environmental Science
Dr. Minchin has extensive expertise in environmental science, sustainable management of resources, and environmental data modeling. From his position as Director-General of the Pacific Community (SPC), a premier scientific and technical organization serving 27 member governments and territories in the Pacific, he is coming to the Bureau. SPC, under his direction, progressed with climate resilience, digital earth observation, and disaster risk reduction initiatives. Most importantly, Dr. Minchin helped start Digital Earth Pacific, an online platform delivering satellite data in real-time to Pacific Island countries, enabling them to track environmental changes and inform policy. spc.int
Before joining SPC, Dr. Minchin was Chief of Geoscience Australia’s Environmental Geoscience Division, responsible for coordinating national programs in environmental earth science and data management. He also held senior roles at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment. His vast experience speaks to his ability to handle complex environmental data systems and directing scientific institutions.
