Concerns Over Bias as Former Liberal Appointee Heads Queensland CFMEU Inquiry

The Queensland government’s recent decision to appoint Stuart Wood KC, a former Liberal party member and experienced industrial relations lawyer, to lead the inquiry into the Queensland CFMEU has sparked questions about impartiality.

While unions acknowledge Wood’s strong credentials—calling him “very well experienced”—some leaders worry that his political background could influence the investigation. Concerns have been raised that personal biases might affect the fairness of the inquiry, potentially shaping its outcomes in favour of certain interests.

The CFMEU (Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union) plays a powerful role in Queensland’s industrial landscape, making the inquiry’s independence all the more crucial. Critics argue that appointing someone with ties to the Liberal party risks undermining public confidence in the process.

Supporters, however, say that Wood’s expertise in industrial relations law is exactly what the inquiry needs to thoroughly examine the issues at hand.

As this unfolds, many are watching closely to see how the inquiry balances experience with impartiality—and whether it can deliver a fair outcome for all parties involved.
