Australia to Host First Three Events of 2026 WSL Championship Tour in Revamped Surfing Schedule
Australia will kick off the 2026 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, hosting the first three events under a newly overhauled calendar that removes the controversial finals day format previously used to determine world champions.
In a major shift, the WSL has announced the tour will no longer begin in January. Instead, the season will launch in April at Bells Beach, followed by stops at Margaret River in Western Australia and Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast. This move gives Australian surfers a strong advantage, starting the season on familiar home breaks.
The decision has been widely welcomed by the local surfing community and athletes alike, including surfing legend Stephanie Gilmore, who is preparing for her competitive return this weekend. Speaking to media with a smile, Gilmore expressed her excitement and motivation. “The competitive fire is still there,” she said, reaffirming her desire to chase more titles.
WSL CEO Ryan Crosby praised the calendar update, saying, “I think kicking off the tour in Australia is a great way to start.” The removal of the one-day championship showdown at the end of the season marks a return to the traditional format, where consistency over the year determines the world champion.
With the first leg of the season rooted firmly in Australian surf culture, the 2026 tour promises renewed energy and fierce home-ground competition.
