Affinity Education Group Executives Resign Amid Child Abuse Scandal

In a major shake-up, Affinity Education Group CEO Tim Hickey and COO Nishad Alani have resigned after a string of disturbing allegations of child abuse at the company’s childcare centres. Their resignation follows more than 70 charges brought against former staff member Joshua Dale Brown for sexually abusing eight children across several centres since 2017.

The Allegations and Investigations

Brown’s charges are sexual assault, child abuse material production, and food tampering. Investigations uncovered that Brown worked at 20 Melbourne childcare centers from 2017, with those run by Affinity Education Group among them. Alarmingly, some of the offenses are alleged to have taken place between April 2022 and January 2023 at the Creative Garden Early Learning Centre in Point Cook, Victoria. Child abuse material was allegedly found at Brown’s home, adding to the seriousness of the matter.

Systemic Safety Concerns

The resignation comes after revelations of widespread safety violations at Affinity Education Group. Between 2021 and 2024, the centres in New South Wales were issued more than 1,700 regulatory violations, averaging more than one daily. The New South Wales regulator issued just nine infringement notices, worth less than $2,000 in penalties ABC.

Further incidents have come to light, such as footage of a baby being slapped by a childcare staff member at a South Strathfield Affinity center in Sydney. The May 2023 video was uploaded on Snapchat with a laughing emoji, raising questions regarding staff demeanor and management.

Executive Compensation During Crisis

In the midst of increasing scandal, company executives have been reported to have received large bonuses, up to $300,000, while the safety issues persist and the public is outraged. This prompted demands for increased accountability and transparency in the leadership of the company.

Response and Leadership Change

Affinity Education Group has hired Glen Hurley, a 25-year-old aged care senior advisor, as new CEO in response to the crisis. The firm has indicated that it is committed to delivering safe, high-quality care to families and caring for its staff during this difficult period.

The Victorian Government has opened a special advice line for the impacted families and is urging them to call Crime Stoppers if they possess any information pertaining to the case Affinity Education.

Broader Implications

Affinity Education Group’s resignation of its senior executives and the following parliamentary inquiry highlight the imperative for reform within Australia’s childcare industry. The scandal has fueled debates surrounding regulatory effectiveness and the need to ensure child safety above commercial interests.

While investigations are ongoing, the priority is on taking care of the affected families and ensuring that such cases do not happen in the future. The commitment to child safety and the enforcement of strong oversight mechanisms will be key in rebuilding public confidence in the childcare industry.
